Squeeze – Exhibition by Art staff

At the end of May the Art & Design squeezestaff put on an exhibition of their own work ahead of the students’ End of Year Summer Exhibition.

From the press release:

Whilst the commitment to maintaining our dual identity as artist and teacher is challenging, it does provide an opportunity to think freely, make and examine materials with renewed curiosity alongside our students. Where subject knowledge is shared and exchanged, the boundaries between teachers and students become blurred.  This development of personal practice informs, enhances and extends teaching and learning, which ultimately benefits all. ‘Squeeze’ provides the opportunity to view emerging ideas and styles of working across a range of art and design pathways: from academic, technical and support staff, trainee teachers and international work placement students employed within the Art & Design department at Bournville College.

We hope you enjoy the show!

Le Gun Workshop – Worcester University

Le Gun 2

Tobias Hickey, the Course Leader of the B A (Hons) Illustration Course at Worcester University invited us to take part in a professional workshop with illustrators ‘Le Gun’. On Friday 13th February, thirteen lucky students from the Foundation and Extended Diploma got the chance to produce a twenty foot wall illustration in just one day! Neil Fox and Robert Rubbish started the day by showing us their work in a slide presentation and then engaged us in an exciting range of activities to encourage inspiration for this collaborative drawing project. This was a memorable day that we will never forget. We were privileged to work with Europe’s most eclectic Illustration group.

January 2015 Visit to London Galleries

IMG_1945

Level 2 & Level 3 Art & Design students visited the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Modern to gather research imagery for their new projects.

Level 2 students made their mark using the Tate’s ambitious new project called Bloomberg Connects.  A digital drawing bar enabled them to create new digital work and see large-scale versions of their art works projected on the wall. Through Bloomberg Connects, they  became participants and co-creators, exchanging ideas and images

Career Academy – The Capital Experience

Channel 4

After a very early start on 1st December, the newly recruited Career Academy students arrived in London for the Capital Experience. The Art and Media students were particularly fortunate, when they got the chance to meet the Commissioning Editor of Documentaries,
Emma Cooper at the Grierson Trust, Channel 4. Emma gave us a fascinating insight into the development of her career from her first job in TV, working on Songs of Praise to running down alleys in ‘Law and Disorder in Philadelphia’ with Louis Theroux. The emphasis of the talk was about having courage and how you can achieve anything, if you have the passion and drive to make it happen.

Here’s Emma and the students, along with Jane Callaghan, Managing Director of the Grierson Trust who kindly hosted the event.

Drawing Portraits

Portrait Drawing

A big thanks to Mike Buckle and Kai Steele, who generously offered their time to sit as models so that the Foundation and Year 2 Extended students could further their skills in draftsmanship and produce charcoal portraits for their portfolio development.

Professional Graphic Designer – Benjamin Dean – Visiting Speaker

Ben's talk

The Foundation and Year 2 Extended Diploma got to learn about what it is like to work in a Graphic Design agency recently. Ben is a Mid Weight Creative at ‘Life Agency’ in the Jewellery Quarter. His skills include video editing, design, illustration, animation and much more. He talked about his portfolio and what it is like to work on such diverse creative projects. He also told us about taking off at short notice and going on exciting  photo-shoots, meeting Jean-Claude Van Damme for a Coors advert and giving words of wisdom about meeting future employers – “the first, second and third rule when you have an appointment is to never be late!
